Abstract

The management of sludge generated at water treatment plants (WTPS) presents a significant environmental challenge, particularly due to its high moisture content, complex composition and the limitations associated with its final disposal. In this context, strategies aligned with the principles of the circular economy have been proposed with a view to reusing this waste as a raw material for new products. The study aims to assess the technical and environmental feasibility of producing pellets from previously dewatered WTPS. The proposal involves transforming the solid waste into a granular material with potential for use as a pollutant adsorbent in water and wastewater treatment systems. To this end, the drying stages, material preparation, addition of binders and compaction will be investigated, in addition to the physico-chemical characterisation of the pellets obtained. In addition, tests will be carried out to assess the material's performance in removing phosphorus from aqueous solutions, as well as analyses to discuss its environmental viability. It is hoped that the results will contribute to the development of sustainable solutions for the management of WTPS, adding value to a widely generated waste stream and promoting its reintegration into environmental applications.
