Prevalence of primary headache among temporomandibular disorder patients and their impact on quality of life

Abstract

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a collective term that defines some clinical problems involving masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joints (TMJ), and associated structures. The chronic headache is a symptom that frequently appears in association with TMD and available international literature presents researches corroborating these findings. According to criteria of the International Classification of Chronic headaches - 2nd edition, 2004, the chronic headaches are classified in primary, secondary and neuralgias. Literature has shown that both the conditions - TMD and chronic headaches - can compromise in different aspects the quality of life of patients. On these data it is based the relevance of the present study, that intends to investigate the prevalence of the primary chronic headaches in TMD patients and to evaluate the quality of life of patients with these two conditions, comparing them with controls, thus collaborating for a clarification of this possible interaction. The sample will be composed for individuals that wait for TMD and Orofacial Pain attendance. These individuals will be evaluated by the application of the RDC/TMD, and a questionnaire for initial diagnosis of chronic headache, that later will be confirmed by a neurologist. The SF 36 questionnaire will be applied in 3 groups (TMD, TMD and chronic headache and control group), and its results will be compared. To the end of the survey it will be obtained the prevalence of primary chronic headache among patients with TMD and the quality of life of the patients with TMD, TMD + Chronic headache, compared with a control group.
