Abstract

PPD is a serious public health problem, mainly in developing countries and has important consequences for both, mother and her son. Objectives: 1) to estimate the incidence of PPD and Common Mental Disorders (CMD; 2) to estimate the association between PPD and CMD with social-economic status, domestic violence and social support. Methods: following up of a cohort started 2005 March, with the mental health evaluation of 830 low-risk pregnant women at Unidades Básicas de Saúde (UBS), from west side of de São Paulo city. The following instruments will be used: 1) Self Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20) - CMD and emotional suffering detecting instrument, able to generate an indicative score of emotional suffering level; 2) Edinburgh Pos Natal Depression (EPDS) - instrument designed and validated in the country to evaluate PPD; 3) Specific questionnaire about domestic violence; 4) Social support scale - adapted to Portuguese idiom from Medical Outcome Study (MOS)- to evaluate social support degree; 5) Questionnaire with social-demographic data and maternal and new-born medical history. Statistical analysis includes PPD and CMD prevalence with 95% confidence interval, relative risks in the association between PPD/CMD and explanatory variables. Univariate and Multivariate will be performed it is expected to show an association between PPD/CMD and domestic violence and inadequate social support. The confirmation of this hypothesis would justify adoption of certain measures by obstetricians and women’s primary care public health services, to identify PPD/CMD and domestic violence cases (AU)
