Abstract

The goal of this project is a general study on the growth of the proton-proton (p-p) and antiproton-proton (ap-p) total cross sections at high energies (above 10 GeV in the center-of-mass system), in particular in a phenomenological approach based on geometrical and optical concepts. For the elastic p-p and ap-p scattering we propose: (a) description of the total cross section data by means of two geometrical models (semi-transparent disk and Gaussian), with ratio and opacity dependent on the energy; (b) study of the applicability and limitation of the models extrapolations at energies outside of the analyzed region; (c) discussion on the physical interpretation of the obtained results and their applicability in other contexts (field theory); (d) investigation on the possibility to extract the real part of the forward amplitude through dispersion relations.
