Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the rainfall events in Praia Grande, in particular those that bring disorder to the city, located in the Metropolitan Region of Baixada Santista (RMBS). It will be evaluated their frequencies, magnitudes, temporal and spatial distribution. The study also intend to highlight the historic nature of the problems caused by precipitation and its relation with the expansion of urban space. It is also goal of the research to examine the administrative and economic impacts of such events in the city. There is significant interest in the impacts of heavy concentrated rainfall, which trigger some problems such as landslides and floods that impact significantly the local and floating population, in view of the importance of tourism in Praia Grande. Another fact to stress is the lack of studies for this area, despite the considerable growth of Praia Grande in recent decades. (AU)
