Abstract

The purpose of this work is to perform a comprehensive investigation on the chemical bonds of complexes that contain oxindol derivatives as ligands, including mainly Cu(II) complexes, which present pro-apoptotic activities. This study will explore the nature of the metal-ligand bonds. Not only different ligands but also diferent metals will be considered. In addition, this work proposes a theoretical analysis about the ability of these complexes to produce ROS through the Haber-Weiss reaction. Furthermore, this work will also investigate the main interaction between the above mentioned complexes with enzymatic (interactions of complexes with amino acids of the catalytic site) and non-enzymatic antioxidants, responsible to the detoxification of ROS. The aim of this work is to correlate the different chemical bonding situations, which depends on the nature of transition metals and ligands, with the pro-apoptotic activities observed experimentally.
