Abstract

The exact role of eosinophil in oral squamous cell carcinomas is not clear yet. The aim of this study is to verify if there is some relation between tumour-associated tissue eosinophilia and the process of stromal invasion in oral squamous cell carcinomas. Patients submitted to the treatment for oral verrucous carcinoma or well-differenciated squamous cell carcinoma, with or without lymph nodes involvement, at the Head and Neck Surgery and Otorhinolaryngology Department of the Cancer Hospital A.C. Camargo, Fundação Antonio Prudente, in São Paulo, Brazil, from 1980 to 2000, will be retrospectively reviewed. Clinical data of the patients with oral cancer will be obtained from the medical records and included age, gender, ethnic group, tobacco and alcohol consumption, tumor location, extension and infiltration pattern (ulcero-infiltrative or exophytic), T and N stages, treatment and clinical follow-up (recurrence, second primary tumor and death). The tumour-associated tissue eosinophilia will be analyzed in the invasive front of the verrucous carcinomas or well-differenciated squamous cell carcinoma, stained with Haematoxilin and Eosin. The eosinophils will be quantified in a x400 field using a camera connected to a computer with an image analyzer software. The number of eosinophils/mm² will be statistically compared in the different tumor groups, as well as, the influence of the tissue eosinophilia in the prognosis of these patients.
