Abstract Yersinia is an enterobacteria and the pathogenic species for humans are Y. pseudotuberculosis, Y. enterocolitica and Y. pestis. The two first cause gastroenteritis and some other clinical syndromes in humans and in animals, while the latter is not related to intestinal diseases, but produces a serious systemic infection. The isolation and the study of Yersinia is not very frequent in Brazil, making it difficult to assess the extent of the involvement of such bacteria as the cause of human and animal diseases, as well as epidemiological data of this bacterium is rare in this country. Particularly, there are few epidemiological studies with strains of Y. pseudotuberculosis isolated in various countries of the world and only one of those was held with Brazilian’s strains. In this study done with Brazilian’s samples the ribotyping was performed and showed a low ability to differentiate the strains of Y. pseudotuberculosis studied. This project aims to type by Multi Locus Sequence Typing (MLST) Y. pseudotuberculosis strains isolated in this country and which were previously typed by ribotyping. The MLST technique has a high ability to differentiate strains that belong to the same genus and species and is highly reproducible. The results to be obtained will help in a better understanding of the epidemiology of the bacteria in Brazil. Furthermore, it will be possible to compare those strains to other Y. pseudotuberculosis isolated from different sources in different countries which information is available in the on-line MLST database. In this way, this study will contribute for a better characterization of this genus regarding its diversity. | |
