Abstract

Severe Plastic Deformation Processes have been applied to pure Ti and Titanium alloys, especially when the final use of these materials is in orthopedical implants. The objective is to upgrade the mechanical properties of this material, in such a way as to approach some properties of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Severe Plastic Deformation of Ti at room temperature can be extremely advantageous, simplifying the process (usually executed between 350 and 500oC) and increasing its efficiency. In the present project, commercially pure Ti (grade 2) will be submitted to Equal Channel Angular Pressing, in a 120o ECAP die, and their properties and microstructure will be characterized. Microstructure will be observed by optical and transmission electron microscopy. Mechanical characterization will include hardness, tensile and compression tests. The work will be accomplished together with a master's degree project, carefully defining the activities, so that they complement each other.
