Abstract

Based on the phenomenological-hermeneutic method, this is a study of the collection of short stories entitled "Páginas recolhidas", written by the Brazilian author Machado de Assis and published in 1899. Through references to Greco-Roman Mythology, the intertextuality between Machado’s short stories and mythological stories regarding theme, narrative and discoursive aspects will be elucidated. While those references are described and explained, analyses of the way Machado’s short stories are related to the facts and values of the myths they refer to and the new meanings that are added to Machado narratives will be presented.
