Fragility in the elderly is a developmental multifactorial condition that leads to functional decline. Oral status is directly related to general health and interferes with the overall quality of life of individuals; however, the association between fragility indicators and oral health conditions in the elderly has not been assessed in the national context. The objectives of this study were: 1) to describe the prevalence of tooth loss, use and need for dental prosthesis and self-perception of oral health; 2) to assess the association between oral health conditions and fragility indicators; and 3) to assess the association between oral health conditions and oral mucosa lesions in the elderly. This study will be developed along with a multi-center and multidisciplinary project named "Study of the fragility in Brazilian elders - FIBRA Network". The sample will gather 601 men and women living in the urban area of the city of Campinas, SP, aged 65 years or older. Data collection includes interviews to assess socio-demographic and behavioral characteristics; physical tests and evaluation of biological fragility; oral clinical examination for the evaluation of tooth loss, use and need of prosthesis, presence of oral mucosa lesions and dental plaque, and applying a questionnaire (GOHAI index) on the self-perception of oral health. Results will be tabular and graphically displayed; the analysis will use multivariate regression models to assess the association between oral health and biological fragility indicators and conditions of oral mucosa, with statistical adjustment by mediating factors. Results are expected to contribute for the planning of oral health programs aimed at the elderly, thus allowing managers and healthcare units to be instructed as to the special needs that may be demanded for the dental care of the elderly population.
