Introduction: The consumption of food away from home has increased in recent decades. This behavior is associated to poor health, because it is related to obesity and with increased cardiovascular risk. Waist circumference measure is correlated with visceral fat and is considered a useful tool for assessing risks to health, including cardiovascular risk.Justification: The analysis of relationships between the characteristics of food consumed away from home and abdominal obesity can bring subsides for public policy of nutritional orientation.Objective: To evaluate the association between food consumption away from home and abdominal obesity in workers from companies of the city of Sao Paulo. Subjects and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study involving about 500 workers. The food will be evaluated through the implementation of 24 hours food recall, identifying the place of consumption of meals as inside or outside the home. Employees will respond to a questionnaire containing questions on personal data and waist circumference will be measure The associations between the categories of waist circumference and proportions of energy, total fat and saturated fat consumed away from home will be studied through analysis of variance (ANOVA) and ordinal logistic regression models.
