Action of photodynamic therapy associated with nonsurgical periodontal treatment: clinical study in humans

Abstract

The scaling and root planning (SRP) consist in choice therapy for periodontal disease. Some alternatives therapies such local or systemic antimicrobials therapies have been used in cases where the SRP did not have effect. However antibiotic therapy may cause drug-resistant bacteria. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) have emerged in recent years as new therapeutic non-invasive modalities for treatment various. The technique has been shown to have effects against a range of oral pathogens and also against drug-resistant bacteria. Since there is a lack of in vivo clinical work with PDT in periodontal disease, the purpose of this study is clinically analyze the influence of PDT in chronic periodontitits in human. Thirty patients, with a clinical diagnosis of chronic periodontitits will be treated in a split- mouth design study. Tree sites of each patient with probing depth of 5 to 7 mm will be selected and divided into 3 groups: G1- SRP (with hand instruments); G2- SRP+TBO (Toluidine Blue irrigation -100 µg/ml); G3- PDT (TBO+ diode laser irradiation with 660 nm, 40 mW, 120 seconds, 4 J/cm2). Clinical assessment of plaque index, gingival index, bleeding probing, probing depth, gingival recession and relative clinical attachment level will be made at baseline and 3 months after treatment with a manual periodontal probe. The clinical results will be statistically analyzed inter and intra-groups ( p< 0.05).
