Abstract

This study seeks to validate a new technique for evaluation of body composition through the scan with 3D image of the body volumes (BV), easy and safe application for the diagnosis of obesity. The aim of this study is first to assess the validity and diagnostic performance of BV to diagnose obesity when compared to various body composition techniques and obesity measures; and second, to asses the correlation between BV with several metabolic and clinical parameters to ultimately develop a risk model for cardiovascular outcomes and mortality. This new model of diagnosis may explain why conflicting results occur with the correlation of body mass index and mortality and cardiovascular events. We will recruit 300 patients (150 men/150 women), aged 18-70 years, referred to the cardiovascular health clinic to address the following aims: 1- To assess the validity and reproducibility of 3D BV; 2- To establish an obesity index based on 3D BV; 3- To assess if BV correlates better with metabolic parameters (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, glucose, C-reactive protein, leptin, adiponectin, etc.) when compared to other body composition techniques and obesity measures; 4- To create a cardiovascular risk score using BV and other metabolic parameters (age, sex, lipid profile, glucose, inflammatory markers, endothelial function, etc.).
