Abstract

The thesis focuses on images made by Jules Martin, a French lithographer who set up in 1869 one of the first lithographic workshops in São Paulo province. He is most known as an author of projects for São Paulo city, among them Viaduto do Chá, but he worked also as artist and entrepreneur. Initially this thesis investigates the personal and professional trajectory of Jules Martin, in order to outline the ways he worked and the social place of the lithographer there. For this purpose the research used the two albums he organized and local newspapers as primary sources. Through the survey of Jules Martin production irregularly distributed in public and private archives, an iconographic catalogue was organized reproducing pictures and presenting short descriptions of their production and circulations. This catalogue is composed by a diversified set of images, but shows that São Paulo and its modernization were important themes. In this sense, some of the views and maps were selected with the purpose of discussing how these places were represented through the dialogue with other images and discourses about São Paulo. With the hypothesis that Jules Martin attempted to reinforce a positive view about those spaces amid a larger scenario of discussion about the future and progress of São Paulo, this thesis inquires how those images could act in relation to the ways of seeing São Paulo at that time (AU)
