Abstract

1969-74, in Brazil, was a paradoxical period marked by strong repression, censorship, and extraordinary economic growth driven by the authoritarian state itself. The national-popular ideals and the revolutionary utopias that guided artistic actions and projects throughout the 1960s were blurred by the consolidation of the cultural industry under the "lead years". By concentrating on the MPB of the so-called marginal (or "cursed") and desbundados, with em-phasis on Jorge Mautner, Jards Macalé, Luiz Melodia, Sérgio Sampaio and Walter Franco, as well as New Baianos and some of the Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Caetano Veloso, showed that the counterculture made in Brazil, not often described as escapist, alienated or depressed, was not a simple malaise provoked by AI-5, nor a badly planted seed in inhospitable lands, of the North American phenomenon. On the contrary: by reinventing means of dealing with coercion, it has gained here a number of names, meanings and a sui generis historical solo. From the analysis of periodicals, selected songs and discs, as well as festivals and other activi-ties in which the musicians and their partners were involved, without neglecting their relations with the music industry and the dialogues they established with other performing artists, I defend The hypothesis that the new experiences, languages, practices and values encompassed by the controversial word counterculture were, in Brazil, contextual, as a structure of feeling, attuned to political, economic, and socio-cultural transformations both nationally and internationally (AU)
