Evaluation of circuit breaker requests of just over half wavelength transmission line

Abstract

The power transmission in transmission lines little longer than half- wavelength is a solution to transport large blocks of energy across distances ranging from 2600 to 3000 km. It is of fundamental importance to understand the electromagnetic transients phenomena associated to this transmission line, when connected in the electric system. This work presents the evaluation of high voltage circuit breakers behavior used in a transmission line a little longer than half-wavelength (TL HWL+) as to the requests of transient recovery voltage (TRV) coming from different maneuver conditions. The 2600 km long TL HWL+ was connected into the Brazilian electrical grid and used as an alternative to transmit 6300 MW power generated by the Santo Antônio and Jirau hydroelectric power plants to the southeast region. In this work, TRV studies were carried out for terminal, short line and remote fault conditions, capacitive switching and load rejection. The TRV results obtained from the simulations were evaluated and compared to the standardized values of circuit breakers, according to IEC 62271-100, in order to verify the need for special requirements. It was observed that, in some cases, TRV values are higher than the limits of the circuit breaker, causing a non-successful interruption. In order to decrease and limit the TRV values for the analyzed system, it is proposed to use arresters in parallel with the circuit breaker terminals. The electrical system in analysis was modeled and evaluated with the use of a time domain simulation tool for electromagnetic transient phenomena in electric power systems, the PSCAD / EMTDC program. The computational simulations were carried out in accordance with the Grid Procedures of the Brazilian Electric System National Operator (ONS) (AU)
