Genesis of Bt horizons of Marília Formation (Upper Cretaceous)

Abstract

The petrophysical characterization is an important step in the exploration works, since it allows to understand the heterogeneities of the reservoir bodies, aiming to increase the recovery factor of the oil fields. In addition to the analysis of facies, petrophysics allows the identification of lateral and vertical variations of porosity and permeability, resulting in a three - dimensional understanding of the reservoirs. In order to elaborate an analogous hydrocarbon reservoir model, stratigraphic section of the Marília Formation in the West of Minas Gerais (Triângulo Mineiro) was studied, through the description of facies and petrophysical studies. The study area includes expositions of sandstones and conglomerates formed in fluvial environment, with different degrees of cementation and interspersed with paleosols. Facies and paleosols were grouped in architectural elements Aeo, OF and CH that served to understand the spatial organization of sandy bodies, as well as interstratal heterogeneities. Samples collected at different stratigraphic levels were analyzed in the laboratory by conventional techniques (porosimeter and permeameter), X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) and mineral density calculations, in order to identify the intra-stratal porosity and permeability. From the results, the absolute porosity and connectivity of the porous space were determined, validating the method as a consistent tool for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the porous space in heterogeneous rocks. Finally, an analogous reservoir model was elaborated, discussing the porosity and permeability variations at different scales and relating them to the paleodepositional and paleopedogenetic conditions (AU)
