Abstract

The poultry and pork production in Santa Catarina, strongly concentrated in the West, is unique in the context of rural areas of the state, due to the performance presented by the meat processing agroindustry, whose creative activity is strongly established in small rural properties. Since its emancipation process in 1917, the municipality of Chapecó has had its dynamism linked to agro-industries of the meat sector, constituting one of the main Brazilian’s animal protein producing centers. The formation of agro-industrial capital is effective, at first, from the significant action of the State in structuring of the main agro-industrial groups, through policies to encourage industrialization. Later, the development of the sector is achieved through the replacement of the traditional independent production systems by an intensive integrated of the production chain, having as its central pillar the integrated model of production based on family work. The organization of production based on the Integration System - integrated partner-agroindustry – ensured to the agro-industries a greater standardization and regularity in the supply of raw material, but imposes on the integrated producer numerous rules regarding the production process. In this context, we defend the thesis that the strong complementarity existing between the countryside and the city, linked by the agroindustry, in fact takes place, however, the productive consumption inherent to the meat agroindustry, which finds in the locality a great potential to dynamize and expand its activities, faces limitations to their expansion, especially in view of the particularities related to the productive plots adopted by the poultry and pork meat processing agroindustry. The objective of this work is centered on analyzing the meat agribusiness and its relationship with the components of the productive consumption, particularly in the city of Chapecó. To understand this process, the methodology of this research consisted in bibliographic and documentary research of data concerning the subject of this study, systematization of a database with information from primary and secondary sources, and the conduction of fieldworks. This study reveals that, although the Integration System imposes several restrictions to the production process, it does not limit the expansion and diffusion of the productive consumption, which is increasingly specialized due to the demands of the agro-industrial sector.
