Physicochemical properties evaluation of bioceramic cements in different experimental models

Abstract

Experimental models can influence the evaluation of properties of bioceramic materials. This study evaluated the effect of immersion solutions on the analysis of the physicochemical properties of bioceramic materials, in addition to evaluating a new reparative and endodontic material. Publication 1: Different immersion solutions were used: distilled water, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and tissue fluid from the subcutaneous tissue of rats. The volumetric change in micro-CT of the repair cements Bio-C Repair (BCR, Angelus), Biodentine (BD, Septodont) compared to IRM (IRM, Dentsply Sirona) was evaluated. PVC tubes (n=7) were filled and scanned in micro-CT, then immersed in 7.5 mL of distilled water, PBS or tissue fluid from the subcutaneous tissue of rats for 7 days. IRM showed higher volumetric change than BCR and BIO in all soaking solutions. BIO and BCR presented similar volumetric change when immersed in PBS and distilled water. When immersed in vivo tissue fluid, BIO and BCR showed lower volumetric change, including an increase in volume for BCR. In conclusion, the soaking media influence the evaluation of the volumetric change of calcium silicate repair materials. Calcium silicate cements present greater volumetric stability when in vivo method was used. Publication 2: Were evaluated the physicochemical properties of volumetric change, solubility and flow of a hybrid calcium silicate based material: NeoMTA 2 (Avalon Biomed) in the repair (NMTA2R) and endodontic sealer (NMTA2S) consistencies compared to BioRoot RCS (BIR, Septodont) and MTA Repair HP (MTAHP, Angelus). Flow was evaluated based on ISO 6876 standard and radiopacity was evaluated by radiographic analysis in millimeters of aluminum. Dentin tubes 4 mm high by 1.5 mm in diameter were filled with the materials for volumetric analysis in micro-CT. Samples were scanned after materials setting and after immersion in distilled water or PBS for 7 days. Flow was greater for NMTA2S than BIR. NMTA2R had the highest radiopacity among all materials. All materials presented flow and radiopacity according to ISO 6876 standard. Materials presented different volumetric change. BIR showed volume increase, with a greater increase in PBS. NMTA2S, NMTA2R and MTAHP presented volumetric decrease. NMTA2S had the higher volume change, but lower than 1%. NeoMTA 2 Sealer and Repair presented radiopacity according to ISO 6876. NeoMTA 2 Sealer showed flow higher than BioRoot. NMTA2 Sealer and NMTA2 Repair showed a volumetric decrease below 1%, with properties compatible with clinical application. (AU)
