Holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) (1986), a M.Sc. in Operations Resarch from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) (1989) and a PhD in Intelligent Network Management from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) (1996). His PhD thesis was developed partly at University of Versailles Saint-Quantin-en- Yvelines, in France. He also worked as a visiting scientist at the Knowledge Management of the University of Sydney in Australia. Currently his research interests include: machine leaning, information retrieval, knowledge representation, ontologies, semantic web and formal concept analysis. He was the Head of Reserch and Development of Embrapa Agricultural Informatics between 1999 and 2003 and between 2005 and 2009, and he was the head of this research Unit from 2009 to 2015.
