André Damasio is an Industrial Pharmacist. He obtained his Ph.D. in biochemistry in 2011, with emphasis on Biochemistry of Microorganisms, at the Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine, University of São Paulo. During his Ph.D. he joined the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Oklahoma State University, OK, USA (2009) to work on the production of client proteins in Aspergillus strains. Also, in 2010 he joined the Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry / CSIC, Madrid, Spain, to work on the immobilization and stabilization of target enzymes. Since 2011 he joined the Brazilian Bioethanol Science and Technology Laboratory, Campinas-SP, initially as a postdoctoral fellow (2011-2013) and then as Research Scientist (2013-2015). Currently he is Assistant Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Tissue Biology, Institute of Biology, University of Campinas (UNICAMP), where he founded the Laboratory of Enzymology and Molecular Biology of Microorganisms (LEBIMO). His research focuses on the production of enzymes for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to biofuels and high-added value products through the genetic improvement of filamentous fungal strains. In addition, some projects underway at LEBIMO address the discovery of new enzymes, the biological importance of some enzymes and the improvement of catalytic efficiency by protein engineering. Moreover, ongoing research in LEBIMO aims to evaluate the relationship between sirtuins and virulence, using Aspergillus fumigatus as a model. LEBIMO is a member of the São Paulo Fungal Group (SPFG).
