Born in Porto Alegre-RS (Brazil), Prof. Viegas Jr. has graduated in Industrial Chemistry at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1994), where also obtained his master's degree in Organic Synthesis (1998). He completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the São Paulo State University "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (2003), in the area of Chemistry of Natural Products/Medicinal Chemistry, followed by a 3-years period of post-doc in Medicinal Chemistry (2006) under the supervision of Prof. Vanderlan da Silva Bolzan. He began his teaching career in 1995 at the Lutheran University of Brazil (1995-1999) and as a Substitute Professor at UFRGS (1998-1999). Prof. Viegas Jr. has authored more than 86 scientific articles, 4 book chapters, more than 100 papers and abstracts in the proceedings of scientific events, 5 patents under national and international registration (PCT), with 3 national and 3 international grants. As a supervisor, he has supervised or co-supervised over 150 students, including 8 post-docs, 5 doctoral students, 25 master's students and dozens of IC and TCC interns. He has acted as a reviewer to several national and international journals and an ad hoc advisor for CNPq, CAPES, for State Research Support Foundations of Alagoas and Amazonas, and for research funding institutions abroad (Portugal, Croatia, Chile, Czech Republic and Poland). Since 2022, Prof. Viegas Jr. is a Full Professor at the Institute of Chemistry at UNIFAL-MG, working on the undergraduate Pharmacy, Biotechnology and Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry courses and on the postgraduate Pharmaceutical Sciences and Chemistry programs. He is the scientific coordinator of the Medicinal Chemistry Research Laboratory - PeQuiM, developing research in the area of Medicinal Chemistry, with an interest in the design, synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of new analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, antiproliferative, neuroactive and anti-COVID-19 and anti-SARS-COV-2 drug candidates. He is the leader of the research group "Planning, synthesis, bioprospecting and characterization of bioactive substances" and memeber of the National Institute of Science and Tecnology in Drugs and Medicines (INCT-INOFAR I II, since 2008). He has been a full member of the Brazilian Chemical Society since 1992. He is Vice-Coordinator of the Neuroscience League (LINEC) at UNIFAL-MG (2021). He has ongoing projects and official collaborations with researchers and foreign institutions at the Univ. of Porto (Portugal), Univ. of Barcelona (Spain), Univ. of Oxford (UK), University Hospital Hradec Kralove (Czech Republic) and Univ. of Bologna (Italy). He is a member of the editorial board of 7 international journals: CNS Neurological Disorders, Mini-Rev. in Med. Chem., Lett. in Drug Design Development, Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, guest executive editor of Curr. Neuropharmacology (2020), Exploration of Neuroprotective Therapy (2021) and associate editor of Frontiers in Pharmacology - Neurological Drugs and guest editor of Pharmaceuticals in the Special Issues "Drug Candidates for the Treatment of Alzheimers and Parkinsons Disease" (2022) and "Potential Pharmacotherapeutic Targets in Neurodegenerative Diseases (2024). He has an H=28 index, > 3272 citations (Publons,Web of Science), H=28, > 2919 citations (SCOPUS) and H=33, > 4830 citations (Google Scholar). Prof. Claudio Viegas Jr. was included among the 100,000 scientists with the greatest impact and visibility in the world in 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023, according to research and scientific metrics carried out by Stanford University and published by Elsevier.
