CV Lattes

Birthplace: Brazil

Graduated in Biological Sciences with an emphasis on Genetics and Molecular Biology from the Federal University of Viçosa in 2005. Completed a Ph.D. in Functional and Molecular Biology from UNICAMP, with research conducted at the National Laboratory of Biosciences in 2009. The doctoral thesis comprises the study of the structure and function of proteins related to cell differentiation, neurogenesis, and childhood leukemia, using techniques of molecular biology and molecular biophysics. Served as a coordinator of the PIPE-FAPESP innovation project from 2009 to 2011, where a pioneering system for genetic identification of wild birds was developed, commercially available in Brazil. During the same period, worked on the development of identification systems based on molecular markers (DNA, RNA, proteins) and viral vaccines applied to the poultry industry. Joined as a professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte in 2011 and founded the Laboratory of Applied Molecular Biology - LAPLIC. Created the discipline of Entrepreneurship in Biosciences, a mandatory component in some undergraduate courses at UFRN (2012). Founder of the Bio Inova Business Incubator (2013) and coordinator of the Graduate Program in Biochemistry at UFRN (2019-2021). Currently mentors students in the graduate programs in Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, and Renorbio, at the master's and doctoral levels. Works in two research fronts: (1) Studies economically important pathogens (viruses and bacteria), aiming to identify genetic elements that regulate transmission, virulence, and the host-parasite relationship; (2) Studies genetic markers for individual identification (microsatellites, SNPs) and their applications. The main techniques used in the research are PCR, capillary sequencing, and metagenomics. Works in synergy with the main economic activities in the state of RN, with recognized involvement in the field of shrimp farming (carciniculture), and in the development of systems for detecting human pathogens. Carries out extension activities aimed at adapting and implementing molecular identification technologies in companies and public institutions. Also actively involved in the study of strategic areas for the implementation of molecular identification technologies in the zootechnical and medical markets. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
