M.D. (1962) and Ph.D. in Biochemistry (1966) by the Medical School of the University of São Paulo. Has experience in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, focusing on the surface membrane of Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of Chagas' disease. His laboratory was the first to describe the novel class of molecules called GIPLs (originally LPPG) and the largest glycoprotein family belonging to the gp85/trans-sialidase superfamily on the surface of the parasite, and probably involved in adhesion and invasion in the host. For 30 years maintained active collaboration with argentinean groups and trained many post-docs from this country in his laboratory. For that reason he was awarded with the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Buenos Aires. He was the President of the Brazilian Technical Committee on Biosafety (2006-2010).
