Graduated in Chemistry from the University of São Paulo (1979), Master in Biochemistry from the University of São Paulo (1981), PhD in Biochemistry from the University of São Paulo (1986). Postdoctorate at the University of Düsseldorf, Germany (1986-1988). Currently is a full professor at the University of São Paulo. It has a contribution in the area of redox stress, mainly in studies on DNA modification promoted by aldehydes. The possible role of aldehydes has been increasingly investigated in cancer induction promoted by urban pollution. Epidemiological and pathophysiological studies also support the association between air pollution and mortality and morbidity from other causes, mainly, but not exclusively, of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Unraveling the mechanisms of modification in biomolecules by exogenous and endogenous aldehydes opens perspectives for a better control of exposure to these agents. In addition to characterizing the aldehyde DNA reaction products, the group developed ultrasensitive LC-based techniques coupled with mass spectrometry to detect these products in biological fluids pointing to the possibility of their use as exposure biomarkers. The group also investigates the role of aldehydes when formed endogenously in neurodegenerative diseases and cardiac ischemia.
