MD and PhD by the University of São Paulo (USP). Parasitologist, works on the following subjects: Chagas disease, malaria, taxonomy, evolution and phylogenny of trypanosomatids. Is member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, of the TWAS (Third Word Academy of Sciences), of the Academy of Sciences of São Paulo, of the National Academy of Medicine and of the Linnean Society of London. Holds the Gran Cross of the Brazilian Order of the Scientific Merit and the Gran Cross of the Order of Ipiranga, of the State of São Paulo. Has been Instructor of the University of Wisconsin, US, and Chercheur Associé of the Institute Pasteur, Paris. Has been Full Professor of the Medical School of the Federal University of SP (UNIFESP) and the Institute for BioMedical Sciences, University of S. Paulo (USP). Has been Pro-Rector of Research of USP, Director of the Institute Butantan and President of the Fundação Zerbini of the Hearth Institute (INCOR) of S.Paulo. Is Emeritus Professor of the Institute of BioMedical Sciences , of the Faculty of Medicine of USP, and.Emeritus Professor of the University of São Paulo. Has been President of the CNPq.
