Birthplace: Brazil

Bachelor in Medical Biological Sciences from Escola Paulista de Medicina (EPM), Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) in 1979, where completed her Master thesis (1982) and PhD (1984), respectively in Psychopharmacology and Psychobiology, as well as her associate professor title ( 2001). From 02/2013 to 04/2017 was the prorector of Post-Graduate Studies and Research of the Universidade Federal de São Paulo, a position also held between September 2008 and March 2009. She coordinated the Post-Graduation Program in Psychobiology (highest level of classification by the Brazilian agency CAPES), between 1997 and 2007 and head of the Department of Psychobiology. She was vice president of ISBRA (International Society of Biomedical Research on Alcoholism - 2006-2010) and a member of the temporary committee of experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) which worked on the definition of Policies on Alcohol. She also worked as a consultant for SENAD (National Secretariat of Policies on Alcohol and other Drugs) and is assistant editor of the journal "Addiction", member of the Editorial Board of Addiction Science & Clinical Practice, referee of several national and international journals, member of the Research Society On Alcoholism. She is member of the Fiscal Council of the Associação Fundo de Incentivo à Pesquisa (AFIP ). She coordinates basic research on Neurobiology of Drug Abuse and clinical / epidemiological studies on alcoholism and drug addiction, especially on early detection and use of brief interventions. She supervised monographs from graduation and specialization students, Masters (26) and PhD (20) theses, besides post-doctoral supervision (3). She also participated in international multicenter projects developed by researchers supported by the Substance Abuse Department of WHO (World Health Organization), among which: a) the study of biological markers of alcoholism (being part of the WHO-ISBRA Biological Markers Group), b) the development, validation and testing of screening instruments of the use of alcohol and other drugs, as well as on the associated Brief Intervention (WHO-ASSIST) and c) the development of the Brazilian portal "Alcohol e-health" (in Brazil: www.informalcool.org.br), in partnership with researchers from the Brazilian Universities other countries (Mexico, India ,Belarus and the Netherlands). In partnership with SENAD, she conceived and still co-ordinate two training courses by Distance Learning Education: a) SUPERA (System for detection of abuse of and dependence on psychoactive substance, brief intervention, referral, social reintegration and Monitoring) offered from 2006 to 2017 to more than 135,000 health professionals, from every Brazilian State and b) Faith in Prevention, by which 25,000 religious and community leaders were trained on the Prevention of Drug Use.
