Maria do Carmo has a degree in Biological Sciences (1982), with a Bachelor's and a teaching degree, and a Master's in Ecology and Natural Resources (1985) from the Federal University of São Carlos. She obtained a PhD in Hydraulic Engineering and Sanitation (1988) and a Free Teaching Degree (1999) from the University of São Paulo. She has been a professor at the São Carlos School of Engineering, University of São Paulo since 1989 and a full professor at the same institution since 2004. She has been a CNPq Research Fellow since 1990 and has experience in the field of Aquatic Ecology, focusing mainly on wetlands, rivers, reservoir management with a view to resilience and sustainability of water resources, and the cultivation and use of microorganisms for bioproducts and effluent treatment. She has participated in and coordinated several research projects, including 3 thematic projects funded by FAPESP. She has supervised 34 PhD students and 44 Master's students, as well as 11 postdoctoral fellows and undergraduate research scholarship holders. She has published 8 books and several articles at the national and international level. She served as Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Hydraulic Engineering and Sanitation (2001-2006), Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Environmental Engineering Sciences (1995-2000), and President of the Graduate Committee of the São Carlos School of Engineering/USP (2002-2007). She was a member of the Chamber of Norms and Resources and the Postgraduate Council - CoPGr/USP (2002-2007) and president and vice president of the Ethics Committee of the University of São Paulo (2014-2018). She was the director of the São Carlos School of Engineering/USP from February 2007 to February 2011. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
