He has a degree in Computer Science (Bachelor) from the Federal University of Uberlândia (1991), a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Uberlândia (1992), a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the State University of Campinas (1995) and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the State University of Campinas (1997). He is currently a Full Professor (MS-6) at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of São Paulo (USP // São Carlos Campus). He received several awards and honorable mentions in Brazil and abroad. He was Editor-in-Chief of the "Journal of Control, Automation and Electrical Systems", promoted by the Brazilian Society of Automatics (SBA), between 2013 and 2017, and of the Magazine "Control and Automation" (in 2012). He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of the Journal of Control, Automation and Electrical Systems", and Associate Editor of "Polytechnica (SPRINGER)". He is a member of the Technical Committee "Computers for Control" of IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control). He acts as a reviewer for articles submitted to more than 25 international scientific journals. national/international publications and more than 390 articles in the annals of scientific events. He has published 8 books (including 2 work organizations), and is also the author of 21 book chapters already published. He supervised 41 master's theses (including 2 co-supervisions). and 30 doctoral theses (including 3 co-supervisions). He has coordinated more than 10 research projects supported by public agencies. He has participated in more than 200 master's/doctorate committees. He is the founder and coordinator of the Laboratory for Intelligent Automation of Processes and Systems (LAIPS) at USP, and is also coordinator of the respective research group certified by CNPq. His research areas include topics related to intelligent automation of processes involving electrical power systems, intelligent control of electrical machines and equipment, design of intelligent systems architectures, system identification and optimization.
