Carlos Alfredo Joly

Carlos A Joly holds a degree in Biological Sciences from the University of São Paulo (USP) (1976), an MSc in Plant Biology from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) (1979), and a PhD in Plant Ecophysiology from the Botany Department at the University of St Andrews (1982). He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Bern (1994).He works in Plant Ecophysiology and Biodiversity Conservation, and has published over 140 papers in specialised journals. He has supervised 26 MSc and 15 PhD students and currently co-supervises one doctoral student. He has edited 13 books, including the series Biodiversity of the State of São Paulo: Synthesis of Knowledge at the End of the 20th Century, the Forest Inventory Atlas of Native Vegetation of the State of São Paulo, the book Guidelines for the Conservation and Restoration of Biodiversity in the State of São Paulo, and the e-book Amazon Dialogues: Contributions to the Debate on Sustainability and Inclusion.He is currently Emeritus Professor at University of Campinas (UNICAMP), retired from the Department of Plant Biology at the Institute of Biology (UNICAMP), a Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and of the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences, a member of the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), Chair of the Brazilian Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BPBES), and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Biota Neotropica. He is accredited in the Graduate Programmes in Ecology and Plant Biology at the Institute of Biology (UNICAMP), and in the PhD Programme in Environment and Society at IFCH/NEPAM (UNICAMP).At UNICAMP, he served as Coordinator of three Graduate Programmes (Ecology, Plant Biology, and Environment and Society), Head of the Department of Plant Biology (19871989 and 20062010), and Vice-Rector for Graduate Studies (19961998). At the São Paulo State Secretariat for the Environment, he served as Coordinator of Technical Information, Documentation, and Environmental Research/CINP (1995), and at the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, he was Director of the Department of Thematic Policies and Programmes/DEPPT (20112012). Within the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), he served as Co-Chair of the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) from 2013 to 2019.In 1999, as Coordinator of the BIOTA/FAPESP Programme, he received the Henry Ford Award for Initiative of the Year in Conservation. In August 2002, he was awarded the Brazilian Order of Scientific Merit (Commander class); in 2005, he received the von Martius Environmental Award from the Brazil-Germany Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and in 2007, he received an Honourable Mention in the Young Scientist Award from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). In 2009, again as Coordinator of the BIOTA/FAPESP Programme, he received the Henry Ford Award in the Science and Human Resources Training category. In 2012, he received the Muriqui Award of the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve; in 2014, the João Pedro Cardoso Medal from the Government of the State of São Paulo and the Zeferino Vaz Academic Recognition Award from UNICAMP; and in 2022, the Conrado Wessel Foundation Science Award.
