Birthplace: Brazil

Jean Paul Metzger is a Full Professor of Ecology at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. He obtained his MSc and PhD in Landscape Ecology from the University of Toulouse, France. Since 1995, he has conducted research in landscape ecology and biodiversity conservation in highly fragmented landscapes, primarily in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. His main research interests focus on landscape connectivity, ecological thresholds and temporal responses to landscape change, and conservation planning. More recently, he has explored the relationships between landscape structure, ecosystem services, and human well-being, as well as the effectiveness of environmental policies in the management of multifunctional landscapes. His research also employs modeling and scenario-based approaches to support landscape-scale planning of forest restoration, ecological compensation, and nature-based solutions. He has published more than 220 articles in journals including Science, Nature, Landscape Ecology, Ecological Applications, Journal of Applied Ecology, Ecography, Oikos, and Biological Conservation, among others. These publications have accumulated more than 20,000 citations, resulting in an H-index of 62 (Scopus database, March 2026).He has supervised 31 MSc dissertations, 21 PhD theses, and 20 postdoctoral projects. He was the founder of the Brazilian Chapter of the International Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE-BR) and served as Vice-President of IALE (20132015).At USP, he has served as Chair of the Research Committee of the Institute of Biosciences (20082011), Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Ecology (20122016), and representative of the Institute of Biosciences on the University Council (20162017).He was Associate Editor of Biological Conservation (20052010) and currently serves on the editorial boards of Landscape Ecology and Current Landscape Ecology Reports, and is Editor-in-Chief of Perspectives in Ecology and Conservation. He has contributed as Lead Author to three assessments of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES): Models and Scenarios of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, Land Degradation and Restoration, and The Americas Assessment, and served as Review Editor for the Transformative Change Assessment. He was also one of the organizers of the Brazilian Assessment of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BPBES; https://www.bpbes.net.br).He was a member and coordinator of the BIOTA/FAPESP Program (20192025) and currently serves on the Scientific Committee of the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Synthesis Center (SinBiose, CNPq).
