Obteve o Doutorado em Física na UFSCar e realizou estágio de pesquisa de Pós-Doutorado no Imperial College London (UK). Foi membro associado do International Centre for Theoretical Physics - ICTP em Trieste (Itália) entre 2005 e 2010. É professor da Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC) desde de 2006, onde fundou e coordenou o Programa de Pós-Graduação em Física. Foi Vice Pró-Reitor de Pós-Graduação da UFABC entre 2010 e 2014. Atuou também como professor visitante, Newton Advanced Fellow da Royal Society (UK), junto a Universidade de York (UK) entre 2015 e 2018. Orientou teses de doutorado ganhadoras do Prêmio CAPES de Melhor Tese na área de Física e Grande Prêmio CAPES/FCW em Ciências Exatas e Engenharia. Seus trabalhos de pesquisa têm despertado grande atenção da mídia internacional (ver Produção técnica - comentários na mídia). Atua em linhas de pesquisa diversificadas e abrangentes, incorporando tanto aspectos teóricos quanto experimentais em Ciência e Tecnologia da Informação Quântica. Está rotineiramente envolvido com o desafio de implementar novas ideias teóricas e abstratas em um cenário experimental.
