Graduated in Zoology at London University?s Queen Mary College in 1960 and is currently a Senior Professor in São Paulo Univiersity?s Biomedical Sciences Institute. He is a consultant for a number of national and international organisations including the World Health Organization. His research has covered a wide range of parasitic protozoans found in animals and men focussing on their participation in Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), especially leishmaniasis and Chagas disease. His interest in the leishmaniases began in the early 1960s. He has worked in Brazil since 1965 making fundamental discoveries and contributions to the diagnosis and epidemiology of protozoal diseases and the identification and classification of the parasites involved and their vectors. His actual research is focused mainly on the application of molecular methods to these research areas. He is a ?Distinguished International Fellow? of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and an elected member of the Brazilian Academy of Science. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
