He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the State University of Campinas (1981), a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the State University of Campinas (1987) and a PhD in Energy Systems Planning from the State University of Campinas (1994). He is professor at the State University of Campinas (2019). Has experience in Mechanical Engineering, with emphasis on Energy, acting mainly on the following topics: biomass, cogeneration, electric energy, sustainability, environment and energy. He was a "joint-appointment" at CTBE (Bioethanol Science and Technology Center), where coordinated the Sustainability research program for four years.
