Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics from the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics at USP in 1974, Master's degree in Atmospheric Sciences from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado in 1977 and PhD in Atmospheric Sciences also from CSU in 1979. Hired in 1975 by the Astronomical and Geophysicist at USP where he currently holds the position of Full Professor. Director of the Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences at USP between 2017 and 2021. Director of the National Laboratory of Scientific Computing at Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation-MCTI between 2007 and 2015. Full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, of the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paul. Commendatory Order of Scientific Merit in 2003. Visiting researcher at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), National Meteorological Center (NMC) and National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) on several occasions. Senior Researcher at INPE between 1988 and 1990 where he was Head of the Center for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies in the implementation phase. Member of the CNPq Advisory Committee in the area of #8203;#8203;Geophysics and Meteorology in several periods (1980-84, 1991-93, 1997-99 and 2009-13) and Coordinator of the FAPESP Geoscience Committee from 1986 to 1990.Member of the CAPES Geoscience Committee between 1999 and 2005. Advisor to FINEP on issues related to Meteorology and Climatology, in the operational area and in research in several occasions. Member of the Joint Scientific Committee ICSU-WMO (1986-1990) and member of the Intergovernmental Pannel for Climate Change -IPCC (1993-1995 and 2004-2007). Member of the Science Steering Committee of the CLIVAR/WCRP program of the World Meteorological Organization and WGNE/WMO (2004-2010). Member of the International Scientific Committee of the LBA program from 1998 to 2008 of which he was president in 2002 and Member of the Scientific Committee of the VAMOS/CLIVAR-WMO program. Co-chair of the GEWEX/CLIVAR PLATIN program. President of the Brazilian Meteorological Society between 1992 and 1994 and Scientific Director between 2007 and 2008. Coordinator of the Environmental Sciences Area at the Institute of Advanced Studies (IEA) at USP from 1999 to 2008, Member of the Scientific Technical Council of the Laboratory National Scientific Computing Committee (LNCC) 1996- 2004, from the National Institute for Space Research of MCT (2002-2006), from the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) between 2001 and 2007, from CBPF (2007-2012), LNA (2007-2013) and ON (2010-2013 ). Coordinator of the Laboratory of Meteorology Applied to Regional Weather Systems (MASTER/IAG/USP), working in the area of #8203;#8203;service provision, training of operational meteorologists and numerical operational weather forecasting. He published around 135 scientific works in refereed journals, mainly international and book chapters, around 200 complete works in Congress Annals and related national and international events. Published around 20 promotional articles, technical reports and teaching material. Advised more than 70 postgraduate students. The areas of specialization are: dynamics of the tropics/extratropics interaction with emphasis on the role of heat sources associated with precipitation through observational studies and numerical modeling; numerical and high performance computing applications in research and operational weather forecasting procedures; experience also in issues of climate variability, climate change and environmental impact.
