Graduate in Medicine from Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, University of S. Paulo (1970), obtained the master's degree (1973) and Ph.D. degree (1975) in Clinical Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirao Preto, University of S. Paulo. He is a full professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of S. Paulo, member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, Research Provost of the University of S. Paulo, and was the president of the CNPq (Brazilian Research Council), President of the University of São Paulo (USP), State Secretary for Health of the State of São Paulo, and at present is the President of the São Paulo Research Agency (FAPESP). He has teaching and research interests in clinical medicne, with strong focus in Hematology and Oncology, and in the past published research papers on the following subjects: population genetics, human DNA polymorphisms, hemoglobins, thalassemias, Brazilian populations, amerindians. More recently he has carreid on research on the molecular bases of malignant diseases and stem-cells. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
