Graduated in Bachelor of Chemistry (1979) and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of São Paulo (1984). Postdoctoral done at the University of Wurzburg (Germany, 1984-1986) and Harvard University (USA, 1986-1988); hired by the USP in 1988 where he is Full Professor; is currently the coordinator of InovaUSP (USP Innovation Center); was the Dean of the Institute of Chemistry, University of São Paulo quadriennium 2014-2018;; was the head of the Department of Fundamental Chemistry of IQUSP during the quadriennium 2010-2014; was General Secretary of the Brazilian Chemical Society 2008-2010, Consulting Board 2010-2014 and Vice-President 2014-2016; is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC); is a member of the Advisory Board of Chemical Communications and MethodsX; is member of ACIESP - Academy of Sciences of the State of Sao Paulo; has experience in the area of ​​chemistry, with emphasis on Polymers, Colloids and Biomaterials, acting on the following topics: biodegradable polyesters, hydrogels, production of nanofibers and nanoparticles and polymeric tissue engineering.
