Has a Physics degree from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1985) and PhD in Physics from the Universidade de São Paulo (1988). His main research interests are the applications of concepts of Statistical Physics ans Stochastic Processes to molecular evolution (group selection), pre-biotic evolution (origin of life), language acquisition and social systems. He serves in the editorial board of the journals Physics of Life Reviews (Elsevier), Theory in Biosciences (Springer) and Mathematics: Section Theoretical and Mathematical Ecology (MDPI).
