Birthplace: Brazil

Maria Luiza Vilela Oliva holds a degree in Chemistry (both Licentiate and Bachelor) from Faculdades Oswaldo Cruz (1978), a Master's (1981), and a Ph.D. (1988) in Biological Sciences with an emphasis on Molecular Biology from the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP). Currently, she is a Full Professor and Tenured Professor at UNIFESP, a CNPq Researcher Level 1A, and an ordinary member of the Brazilian Society of Biochemistry. Her research focuses on the structural and kinetic characterization of proteolytic enzyme inhibitors isolated from plants, investigating their interaction with enzymes to understand the mechanisms involved in proteolysis regulation. These studies have potential applications in the development of inhibitors that modulate biological processes such as blood coagulation, blood pressure regulation, inflammation, and tumor cell proliferation. Currently, she is also investigating fragments derived from these proteins in models of breast cancer, glioblastoma, and melanoma, focusing on their antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and antithrombotic effects. The main topics of her scientific production include platelet aggregation, protease inhibitors, cancer (with an emphasis on breast cancer), coagulation, protein structure, inflammation, the kallikrein-kinin system, Kunitz-type proteins, medicinal plants, bioactive peptides, thrombosis, and COVID-19.
