Birthplace: Brazil

Scientific Researcher VI at the Butantan Institute, Laboratory of Pathophysiology.Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy and Biochemistry (Fac. Oswaldo Cruz, 1997), Master's in Parasitology at the Institute of Energy and Nuclear Research - USP (1999), PhD in Parasitology (Institute of Biomedical Sciences - USP) (2003) with a sandwich period at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London (LSHTM) (supervised by Prof. Simon L. Croft). Postdoctoral research at UNIFESP (Physiology). For the third year (2020, 2021, 2024), included in the Stanford University (USA) - Elsevier Top 2 Scientists Rankings. Member of the Research and Postgraduate Chamber of the Butantan Institute (2025-present). Was a researcher at the Adolfo Lutz Institute (2004 and 2023), coordinator of the Laboratory for New Drugs for Neglected Diseases (2004-2023), and vice-director of the Center for Parasitology and Mycology (2009-2023). Permanent faculty member of the Graduate Program in Toxinology (2024-present). Faculty member (2010-present) of the Graduate Program in Infectious Diseases and Global Health (USP Faculty of Medicine). Faculty member (2006-present, and vice-coordinator 2010-2021) of the Graduate Program in CCD (State Health Department) and coordinator of the Laboratory Research in Public Health area (2010-2021).Area of expertise: New drugs for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) with an emphasis on Leishmaniasis and Chagas disease. Focused on Drug Discovery in Parasitology (Protozoology), we develop studies on in vitro and in vivo efficacy of pharmaceutical prototypes, selecting lead compounds for optimization. We conduct studies on biological activity in intracellular forms of Leishmania and T. cruzi, cytotoxicity, and investigate mechanisms of action using different techniques. To obtain pharmaceutical prototypes, our group develops two main lines:Microbial metabolites from the collection of marine invertebrates and extremophiles to the isolation of bacteria from microbiota, their identification, scaling, and isolation of special metabolites (<1000Da).Drug repositioning and release systems such as liposomes. We conduct studies on new prototypes for multidrug-resistant bacteria (ESKAPE).International Collaborations: Coordinated 4 SPRINT FAPESP projects and maintains partnerships with the University of Oxford (UK), University of Southampton (UK), Ohio State University (USA), Kings College London (UK), as well as collaborative partnerships with the University of Dundee (UK), University of Auckland (New Zealand), Universität Munster (Germany), Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena (Germany), University of Bangor (UK), Centro de Investigaciones Biologicas (Spain), Universidad La Frontera (Chile), and LSHTM (UK). Coordinated a public-private partnership project with the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (UK) (Trust in Science 2011-2014) in the development of a product for leishmaniasis. Member of the Brazilian Society of Parasitology. Founding member (2011-present) of the international research network "Research Network - Natural Products for Neglected Diseases" at Universität Münster (Germany). Since 2018, member of the Editorial Board - Infectious Diseases of the journal Scientific Reports (Nature Group). Acts periodically as an ad hoc reviewer for international agencies such as Research Councils (RCUK), Health Research Board (Ireland, UK), Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR-France), Conycit (Argentina), and National Science Centre (Poland).Publications: 167 articles (H-index 35, 4021 citations); supervisor of 13 Master's theses, 11 Doctoral theses, and 5 Postdoctoral researchers. Co-author of a patent application in the area of drugs for Chagas disease, and winner of the 2021 Kurt Politzer Technology Award from the Brazilian Chemical Industry Association.
