I hold a bachelor?s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences (1983) and a PhD degree (1987) in Biochemistry from Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil, under the mentorship of Prof. Maria Helena Juliani. I continued my research as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Saint Louis University, Saint Louis, USA (1987-1989), under the supervision of Prof. Claudette Klein. From 1987 to 1990 I worked in the Biotechnology Center at Instituto Butantan, São Paulo. Since 1991 I have a permanent position in the Department of Biochemistry at Institute of Chemistry, University of Sao Paulo and became a full Professor in 2008. In 2011, I was a visiting researcher in the lab of Steve Lindow at University of California, Berkeley for 6 months. In 2017, I was nominated as member of the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences. My research field is biochemistry, molecular biology and genomics of microrganisms. My research group investigates the virulence and adaptation mechanisms of the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa which colonizes and causes disease on several plants such as orange trees, grapevines and olive trees. We also investigate the diversity and dynamics of microbial communities in natural and engineered environments using metagenomics. The scope of our research has now been expanded to the discovery of new bacteriophages aiming future application in phage therapy and to study the mechanisms of phage-bacterium interaction.
