Graduated in Biological Science, Area Biomedicine at Universidade Estadual de Londrina (1980), master's degree in Molecular Biology (1984) and Doctorate /PhD in Microbiology and Immunology at Federal University of Sao Paulo (UNIFESP) (1988), post-doctoral training at Tufts University (1989-1990), Boston, MA, under supervision of Dr Charles Dinarello, and Stanford University (1991-1992), Stanford, CA, USA, under supervision of Dr Steven Sherwood. Has experience in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology and Immunology. He is co-discover the Dermcidin, an antibiotic peptidefound in the sweat with multiple biological functions. His work is focused on the role of dermcidin as oncogene for skin cancer and breast cancer through its modulation of cell death pathways (apoptosis and necrosis), antimicrobial activity, mediator of inflammation and immune-modulating properties on the innate and adaptive responses.
