Graduate in Chemistry at University of São Paulo (1971) and Ph.D. in Chemistry from the same university (1976), under the supervision of the late Pawel Krumholz and José Manuel Riveros. Pos-Doc investigations at University Tor Vergata of Rome, Italy in 1991-1992, at Giuseppe Rotilio laboratory, and at State University of New York, Albany, USA, at Charles Scholes laboratory, in 1996/1997. Has experience in Biological Inorganic Chemistry, acting mainly on the following subjects: syntheses and spectroscopic characterization of metal complexes; catalytic activity of coordinated metal ions; redox processes; detection and identification of reactive intermediary species; interactions of metal ions with biomolecules (especially proteins and nucleic acids); biological and pharmacological reactivity of transition metal complexes; development of novel antitumor or antiparasite metallodrugs. Has ~140 publications in the subject. Received the "Comenda da Ordem Nacional do Mérito Científico" from the Presidency of Brazil and Ministry of Science and Technology in 2007, and the Medal "Icaro S. Moreira from the Inorganic Chemistry Division of the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ) in 2009. In May 2022, received the Medal "Simão Mathias" from the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ). Guest Editor of journal Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences (Special issue: Design, Synthesis, and Preclinical Testing of Innovative Anti-Cancer Compounds) in 2022.
