M. Angela A. Meireles is a professor of Food Engineering at UNICAMP (University of Campinas) where she enrolled in 1983 as an assistant professor. She holds a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering from Iowa State University, USA (1982); she also holds an MSc and a BS degree in Food Engineering from UNICAMP (1979 and 1977). Dr. Meireles is the Coordinator of the Food area of CAPES. She is a partner of Bioactive Natural Ltda CNPJ .: 20257073 / 0001-70 (company incubated at the Innovation Centre, Entrepreneurship and Innovation - Cietec). Dr. Meireles published 251 research papers in peer reviewed journals and has more than 520 communications in scientific meetings. Dr Meireles supervised 44 PhD dissertations, 30 MSc thesis, and about 44 undergraduate research projects. Her research is in the field of production of extracts from aromatic, medicinal, and spice plants by supercritical fluid extraction and conventional techniques such as steam distillation, GRAS (or green) solvent extraction including: process parameters determination, process integration and optimization, extraction fractionation, and technical and economical analysis. She has coordinated scientific exchange projects between UNICAMP and European Universities (France, Holland, and Germany). Nationally she coordinated a project called SuperNat that involved 6 Brazilian Institutions (UFPA, UFRN, UEM, UFSC, IAC) and a Germany University (TUHH); she has coordinated a Thematic Project financed by FAPESP (State of São Paulo Science Foundation) from 2000 – 2005 (Supercritical technology applied to the processing of essentials oils, vegetable oils, pigments, stevia, and other natural products). Presently she is coordinating 2 technology transfer projects in the area of supercritical fluid extraction from native Brazilian plants. She belongs to the Editorial Board of the Brazilian Journal of Medicinal Plant, the Journal of Food Processing Engineering (Blackwell-Publishing), Recent Patent in Engineering (Bentham Science Publishers); The Open Chemical Engineering Journal (Bentham Science Publishers); Pharmacognosy Reviews (Pharmacognosy Netword); Food and Bioprocess Technologies (Springer); she was Associated Editor of the journals Ciência e Tecnologia de Alimentos (Food Science and Technology) and Boletim da SBCTA (News Letter from SBCTA, Braz. Soc. Food Sci. Tech.) from 1994 – 1998. Editor of the book “Extracting bioactive compounds: theory and applications” for CRC Press, schedule to be on sale by December 2008.
