I completed my PhD in Biological Sciences (Biology-Genetics) from the University of São Paulo (USP) in 1991. I have worked at the Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP) since 1989 and am currently a Full Professor. I am also a Research Associate at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institute (USA) and the Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad (Ecuador). I am a reviewer for several foundations and scientific journals and Assistant Editor of the journals Scientific Reports, Frontier in Genetics, Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, Journal of Animal Diversity and Neotropical Ichthyology. I have published more than 400 articles in specialized magazines, several book chapters and a book. I have participated in several undergraduate courses in the area of #8203;#8203;Cellular and Molecular Biology and in postgraduate programs in the areas of Genetics and Zoology. I have been working with fish for the last 35 years, carrying out research in various fields such as: cytogenetics (chromosomes), population genetics, systematics, taxonomy, biogeography, ecology and evolutionary biology. The main focus of my research is fish biodiversity in the Neotropical region and, to this end, I have worked with many friends around the world to investigate this biodiversity and mainly study its origin and maintenance.
