Currently holding the positions of Procientista UERJ and Jovem Cientista do Nosso Estado/FAPERJ, as well as being a researcher for the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Carvalho is a Professor at the Department of History and the Graduate Program in History at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). He was designated as a CNPq Research Productivity Fellow, Level 2, from 2019 to 2022, and served as an Alexander von Humboldt research fellow at the University of Bonn in Germany from 2019 to 2021. Moreover, he was a Research Fellow at the Benson Latin American Collection at the University of Texas at Austin in 2017, and a Visiting Scholar at Vanderbilt University in the United States in 2016. His postdoctoral fellowship in Latin American History at the University of Seville in Spain spanned from 2013 to 2016. Having received a PhD in History from the University of São Paulo in 2012, Carvalho honed his research skills during sandwich doctoral internships at the University of Seville in Spain and the Technical University of Lisbon in Portugal. His groundbreaking work has been recognized with numerous grants and awards, including the Scientific Award Casa da América Latina/ Santander Totta for the best Doctoral Thesis in the category of Social Sciences and Humanities in 2014, and the "Slicher Van Bath De Jong Fund for the advancement of study and research on the history of Latin America" for the best research project of 2014, awarded by the Centre for Latin American Research and Documentation in Amsterdam, Netherlands. With a focus on the history of the Amazon, the territorial formation of Portuguese America, governance in Iberian empires, and Jesuit missions, Carvalho has authored four books and several articles in peer-reviewed journals.
