Karla Patricia Santos Oliveira Rodriguez Esquerre

Associate Professor IV at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). She is the founder and coordinator of the Gamma Research Group (gamma.ufba.br) and is part of the Graduate Programs in Industrial Engineering (PEI, Capes 5) and Energy and Environment (PGEnAm). She focuses on developing metrics and models that encourage more sustainable processes and systems, and she leads initiatives that strengthen data literacy and the scientific, entrepreneurial, and civic education of young people, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. With a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Unicamp, including a sandwich doctorate at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), her career recently included a stint as a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University's Graduate School of Education (USA, Jan-Apr 2023). She has also served as a visiting researcher at the Center for Control Systems and Dynamics and the Adaptive Computing and Embedded Systems Lab at UCSD (2015 and 2020), as well as in the Socioenvironmental Engineering program at Hokkaido University, Japan (Apr 2003 - May 2005). She collaborates with companies and public institutions, as well as with prominent research groups worldwide, including Stanford, UCSD, and UCLA, and with national partners such as SEI-BA, Instituto Anísio Teixeira, Instituto Sidarta, and Instituto Cultural Steve Biko. She is the idealizer and coordinator of the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in Public Education Program, an initiative that expands the original project Girls in Data Science. She is also a co-founder of AI Inclusive Salvador and R-Ladies Salvador, initiatives aimed at the inclusion of minorities in the fields of artificial intelligence and data science.
