Is an associate professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), where his research focuses on the role of water vapor and clouds in the climate system and their response to anthropogenic influences, particularly changes in aerosols. His work emphasizes water vapor transport over South America and the Amazon forests crucial role in moisture recycling through evapotranspiration and precipitation. He employs physical models based on complex networks and atmospheric models to investigate biosphere-atmosphere interactions. Before joining UMBC in 2022, he served as a faculty member at the Physics Institute of the University of São Paulo from 2008 to 2021, including as Head of the Department of Applied Physics from 2018 to 2021. He held visiting professor positions at the University of Granada, Spain, in 2019, and the University of Manchester, UK, in 2015. From 2004 to 2008, he worked as an assistant researcher at the Brazilian Institute for Space Research. His earlier work includes contributions to the development of the Brazilian Earth System Model, with a focus on physical parameterizations for climate models, particularly radiation and convection processes. In his career, he has advised 19 graduate students and 14 undergraduate students from Brazil, Spain, and the USA. He was the Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) in 18 scientific proposals across Brazil, Spain, the UK, and the USA. He has organized important conferences, such as IGAC (International Global Atmospheric Chemistry), as well as multiple sessions at AGU (American Geophysical Union) and AMS (American Meteorological Society). His active engagement in the global scientific community is further reflected by his election as a member of the International Commission of Clouds and Precipitation (ICCP) for the 20212024 term.
