He has a PhD in sciences in the area of microbiology at the University of São Paulo in 1989 and Postdoctorate in Virology at the CDC-Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA, USA (1990 to 1994) and member of the World Health Organization-who as representative of South America in the WHO Biosafety Advisory Group in the year 2004. Currently a Full Professor of virology and Chief of BSL3+ facility at the University of São Paulo-USP, Department of Microbiology of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences-ICB. Responsible for the Graduation on Biosafety of the Department of microbiology of the ICB since 2005. He has experience in the area of microbiology, with emphasis on virology, acting primarily in the following topics: clinical and molecular diagnosis, human and animal viruses, exantemátic viruses, respiratory viruses, wild viruses, emerging viruses, viral genetic diversity, biosafety level BSL 2 and BSL 3.
